The 2024 edition of the West Virginia Wildlife Calendar is now available to purchase online at WVstateparks.com and at select retail locations around the state!

If you’re not familiar with West Virginia’s award-winning calendar, it features beautiful paintings of state animals each month as well as important hunting and fishing dates, peak wildlife activity times and articles that will help you get the most out of your outdoor adventures in 2024. Sales of the calendar have helped fund WVDNR Wildlife Resources Section programs for more than 30 years.

To help you get a better idea of how the Wildlife Calendar is made and why purchasing one helps the WVDNR, we filmed a video of the calendar’s printing and asked Sanya Zickefoose, our Calendar Program Manager, a few questions. You can read her responses below or watch the video interview here:

2024 West Virginia Wildlife Calendar Q&A

Question 1

Can you tell us about the history of the West Virginia Wildlife Calendar and its significance in promoting awareness and appreciation of the state’s diverse wildlife species? We have featured artwork and information about the state’s various wildlife species, including the lesser known wildlife such as the spotted skunk and the regal moth for over 35 years. The awareness of the varying species not only educates people on their presence in the state, but it also helps people appreciate our state’s diverse wildlife.

Question 2

How does the revenue generated from calendar sales contribute to funding wildlife diversity projects across West Virginia? Could you share some specific examples of projects that were/are made possible through calendar sales? The calendar revenue contributes to research and conservation for our state’s non game wildlife species. Some of the projects the calendar helps fund include our Candy Darter Restoration project and our Citizen Science projects working with fireflies, box turtles, the rattlesnake survey and Hellbender project. More information about these projects can be found on the WVDNR website.

Question 3

In what ways does the calendar promote conservation and inspire the public to protect the natural habitats of West Virginia’s wildlife? The calendar promotes conservation and provides information to the public about our state’s various animals living right in our backyards. With this awareness we can educate ourselves on how we can protect our wildlife and co habitat.

Question 4

For people who want to purchase the West Virginia Wildlife Calendar, where and how can they buy one? Are there any specific shops or online platforms available for ordering? To purchase a Wildlife Calendar you can mail in or call in your order to the Elkins Operations Center or we are planning on online ordering being available beginning in September. A list of available retail locations will also be posted to the DR website in September.

Question 5

Timing is crucial for calendar sales. When is the best time for people to purchase the calendar to ensure they can enjoy the full year’s worth of stunning wildlife images and information? To ensure you get your calendar with enough time to enjoy its stunning wildlife images we encourage you to purchase your calendar before the rush of the holiday season in November. Orders are open now so be sure to get your calendar order in before they’re gone!
