What to Know Your First Time Hunting

Are you a first-time hunter in West Virginia? Get started by purchasing your West Virginia hunting license. The easiest way to purchase your West Virginia hunting license is by purchasing it online. All hunters are required to be 15 years old or older when hunting on public land. All hunters are required to have a hunting license.

Proper Hunting Licenses

All persons born on or after January 1, 1975 must first successfully complete a certified hunter education course before purchasing a base hunting license. Persons who wish to try hunting and/or trapping without taking a hunter education course may buy an Apprentice Hunting License at any license agent. Anyone under the age of 15 may hunt or trap without a license when accompanied by a licensed adult who remains in a position near enough to render advice and assistance. All licensed hunters must carry a valid form of ID while hunting/trapping. Hunting, trapping, and fishing licenses are good for the calendar year. Licenses can be purchased at the beginning of each year. The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources offers licenses for both West Virginia residents and non-residents.  Lifetime licenses are eligible to purchase for residents, non-resident, full-time students of any West Virginia college or university. A variety and combination of hunting, trapping and fishing licenses can be purchased.

West Virginia is home to many opportunities for hunting on public land. Public lands in West Virginia include National Forests, National Wildlife Refuges, National Park Service Lands, State Forests, and Wildlife Management Areas.
